Fish Locations & Rare Creature Index

Where each island's water actually holds, at a glance β€” the full index is below.

Island 1

Starter minnows, calm surface fishing. Good money: cook your catch before selling.

Island 2

Leaping Piranhas & Flying Fish. Keep an SMG on you; they attack from the air.

Island 3

Rare endangered fish in the deep trench β€” trade one for Carrot Bait to fight the Pufferfish.

The index below documents every major fish habitat, special behavior, bait requirement, and vendor value across the three islands.

1. Island 1: The Shallow Starter Waters

Island 1 is your training ground. The waters here are relatively placid, making it the best location for beginner anglers to practice line tension mechanics and accumulate starter cash:

  • Common Minnows & Mackerel: Plentiful in the shoreline shallows. Fast bite rates, low struggle difficulty. Perfect for stocking your initial food pantry on the grill.
  • Rockfish & Crabs: Found near coastal boulder formations. Yields medium meat portions when cooked.
  • Vendor Value: Typically sells for $1 to $5 each at the starter trading station.

2. Island 2: Predatory & Airborne Species

As you sail into the deeper waters of Island 2, the fish become weaponized:

  • Leaping Piranhas: Spawns in dense schools in the open ocean. When hooked (or simply agitated by engine noise), they launch straight out of the water at player head-height. Have an SMG ready to shoot them out of the air.
  • Airborne Flying Fish: Glides gracefully across the sky in wide arcs. Shooting a Flying Fish mid-air triggers the game's famous 5x Trick Shot score multiplier, turning standard catches into massive cash windfalls.
  • Island 2 Boss: Attracted exclusively by Leech Bait foraged from the island floor.

3. Island 3: Rare & Endangered Quest Catches

The deep ocean trenches surrounding Island 3 contain the rarest and most valuable wildlife in the game:

  • Endangered Ancient Fish: An extremely elusive, slow-biting catch with immense resistance on the line. DO NOT SELL OR COOK THIS FISH! It is a mandatory quest item required by the Island 3 hermit NPC in exchange for Carrot Bait.
  • The Massive Pufferfish: Summoned exclusively with Carrot Bait. It does not stay in the waterβ€”it inflates into a giant rolling sphere that wrecks island structures and drops the game-winning Pufferfish Tail trophy (see our full Pufferfish Boss Guide).

4. The Rare "Drip" Variant System

Collecting rare variants is an official goal of the game: Dazed Games' store description lists "Try to collect the rare variant of all the different fish" as one of the things you do. Any standard fish in the game has a low percentage chance to roll as a "Drip" Variant. These creatures are easy to identify by their outrageous aesthetic modifications:

  • The Drippy Urchin: A vibrant neon pink sea urchin. Catching this specific creature unlocks the coveted "Drip" Steam achievement.
  • Sunglasses & Gold Chain Fish: Spawn with distinct visual accessories. These fish sell for 3x to 10x the price of standard variants at vendors.
  • Fishipedia Achievement: Dedicated completionists must catch and register every unique Drip variant to unlock the "Fishipedia" achievement.

5. Oceanic Event Monsters & Mini-Bosses

Beyond standard line fishing, random oceanic events spawn terrifying apex creatures:

  • The Military Shark: Triggered when a military broadcast announces they have "located a big creature." Requires concentrated heavy weapon fire to defeat and unlocks the "Deadliest catch" achievement.
  • The Terrorizing Giant Bird: Swoops down from the storm clouds to attack player boats. Defeating it unlocks "Terrorizing bird", while letting it lift your boat into the sky unlocks the physics-defying "I'm the bird now" achievement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where do you find rare Drip fish in How to Fish?
Drip fish variants (such as the pink Drippy Urchin and sunglasses-wearing fish) have a small percentage chance to spawn across all island waters when using standard or upgraded rods. Catching a Drip creature unlocks the 'Drip' Steam achievement.

Where are Piranhas and Flying Fish located?
Piranhas and Flying Fish spawn starting in the deep waters of Island 2 and Island 3. Piranhas leap at players to attack, while Flying Fish glide through the air and can be shot for a 5x trick shot score multiplier.

Where do you catch endangered fish needed for Carrot Bait?
Endangered rare fish are located in the deep ocean shelf surrounding Island 3. They require patience and a sturdy rod to reel in. Once caught, you must trade them to the Island 3 NPC in exchange for Carrot Bait.

How does cooking fish affect their value in How to Fish?
Cooking raw fish fillets on the grill restores player hunger and raises a catch’s sell value up to 1.5x at the golden-brown sweet spot. Overcooking any item to a charred state destroys its value entirely. Rare Drip variants should generally be sold raw for maximum profit unless emergency food is needed.
